Synopsis:

The Quinta da Regaleira was the palatial residence of Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Brazilian-born financier. It is located in the town of Sintra, a small community 14 miles northwest of Lisbon, that has traditionally been a retreat for the wealthy of Lisbon, including the royal family which built two palaces in the town. Although built several hundred years after the Mannerist period, the gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira follow many of the Mannerist tendencies, the most noted being that of storytelling. The garden is one of the best examples of the use of myth and theatrics in the garden, which should come as no surprise. The garden was designed by the Italian Luigi Manini, who was one of the most noted opera set designers of his day, and his flare for pageantry is ever-present throughout the estate.
