Cotoneaster Species Comparisons


This page is intended to help you become more familiar with the different Cotoneaster species. Here you can quickly compare the different species to better learn the distinguishing characteristics of each.
Leaf
Cotoneaster apiculatus - The leaf is 1/4 - 3/4 inches long and circular in the shape, with a somewhat appearance. They are a dark glossy green color. Cotoneaster dammeri - The leaf is 3/4 inches long and more elliptic than the leaf of Cotoneaster apiculatus. It is a dark glossy green color.
Cotoneaster lucidus - The leaf is 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 inches long and ovate in shape. They are a glossy dark green on top and an olive green and somewhat pubescent on the bottom. They turn bright red and orange in the fall.

Fruit
Cotoneaster apiculatus - It produces 1/4 inch red pome fruit profusely. Cotoneaster dammeri - The red pome fruit is 1/4 inch in diameter. Fruit production is not nearly as profuse as Cotoneaster apiculatus.
Cotoneaster lucidus - THe fruit is 1/2 inch in diameter. It is green and red in the summer, but matures to black in fall.

Form
Cotoneaster apiculatus - The plant is grows 3 feet high and spreads up to 6 feet wide. It grows in a tangled mass witha rching branches. Cotoneaster dammeri - It grows very low to the ground, reaching only 18 oinches tall and spreading up to 6 feet. The branching is very dense, but it can become leggy looking in shady locations.
Cotoneaster lucidus - It is a large shrub with a rounded habit. It grows 6-10 feet high and wide.
